Tree work in Bli Bli

Named for the swamp oak

Council's town history records that Bli Bli is named after billai billai, which it gives as Aboriginal for swamp oak. Swamp oak is a casuarina that grows in wet, salty ground like the river flats here, and it drops dense, needle-like branchlets into gutters. Cut one down and it sends up suckers from its roots.

Council describes the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, on the outer fringe of Bli Bli, as land inundated by seasonal freshwater floods and salty tides. Ground on the river flats can be waterlogged the same way, and trees there tend to grow shallow root plates that fail when the soil is saturated.

Council's page on the sanctuary calls the broad-leaved paperbark, with its pale, papery bark, the hero of its melaleuca forest. Where one grows in a garden near the wetlands, it sheds thick layers of bark and carries a heavy, spreading crown over wet, shallow roots.

Bli Bli questions

The wetlands and the old school grounds

Can trees along the river be trimmed back?

Garden trees can. Council lists wet eucalypt forest, melaleuca forest, casuarina woodland, mangroves and salt marsh in the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, and mangroves are protected marine plants in Queensland. The sanctuary is also mapped as a Local Heritage Place, so its trees are council's to manage, and a job next door keeps branches, debris and machinery out of it.

Are the trees at the old school heritage listed?

They are part of the listing. The Original Bli Bli School Grounds are a Local Heritage Place in the planning scheme, with the heritage type recorded as building and trees, so pruning or removing one of those trees is a matter for council. Work on a block beside the grounds keeps machinery and cuts clear of their roots and canopy.
