Tree work in Yandina

Heritage camphors and a rising river

Koongalba, a Yandina house on the Queensland Heritage Register, has an avenue of seven large Camphor Laurels forming its driveway. Camphor laurel is a restricted invasive plant across the Sunshine Coast, but these ones are part of a listed State heritage place, and cutting one back or taking it out can need heritage approval or an exemption first. Big, dense camphors like these come down in sections, not in one piece.

The Bureau of Meteorology's flood history lists 5.15 metres at the Yandina gauge in June 1983, the highest Yandina peak in its table, and 4.52 metres in February 2022. When the river runs that high, the low flats stay waterlogged for days, and trees on them can lean or uproot once the water drops. Stump grinders and loaded trucks wait until that ground firms up.

Yandina questions

Koongalba's bunyas and weekend tip hours

Can the bunya pines at Koongalba be trimmed?

Only after a heritage check. At Koongalba, Bunya Pines stand along the southern boundary, and the register says the mature plantings there contribute to the Yandina townscape. Bunya cones are heavy enough to hurt people and dent roofs, so any cone removal or limb work is cleared first, and tall bunyas are climbed and dismantled from the top rather than dropped.

When can green waste go to the Yandina tip?

Only at weekends. Council lists the Yandina transfer station as open 9.00am to 2.00pm on Saturday and Sunday, so a weekday job in town cannot drop its load there. Branches are mulched on site instead, or taken to a council facility that is open that day.
