Tree work in Kenilworth

A homestead fig, two bunyas and a river that floods

The Queensland Heritage Register entry for Kenilworth Homestead records large established trees and gardens around the homestead, significantly a c1901 fig tree to the south of the house. Between the buildings and the hill it also lists a pair of bunya pine trees and a pair of hoop pines. Because they belong to a state heritage place, pruning any of them is cleared with the state first, and the work is planned around the fig's wide surface roots and the heavy cones a mature bunya drops.

Low ground beside the river goes under water. When council built new amenities at Isaac Moore Park, at the entrance to Kenilworth, it had them designed to sit above ground level because of seasonal flooding from the Mary River. Trees on those flats stand in soil that is often saturated, which loosens their roots and makes a lean or a fall more likely, and a grinder or a loaded truck waits for the ground to dry.

Wind has done real damage here before. In the unnamed cyclone of February 1954 the Kenilworth district was isolated, and one report said great trees were uprooted and others stripped of their branches. A big tree with a lean toward the house, or a split in its main fork, is worth having checked before the summer storms.

Kenilworth questions

Honey locust, a weekend tip and fire in the park

What should be done about honey locust on the bluff?

Council's invasive plant alert says the honey locust tree, native to North America, has been found on properties along Bluff Road and Wilcox Road in the Kenilworth Bluff area, and asks people there to check their land and contact council if they find it. It is a pest to be removed, not pruned and kept. Council also notes that several similar native spiky plants are habitat for birds and butterflies, so the tree is identified before anything is cut, and its stump is ground out or treated so it cannot shoot again.

Is the Kenilworth transfer station open on weekdays?

No. Council opens it 8.00am to 1.00pm Saturday and Sunday only, and it has no recycling market. It is also one of two council sites, with Yandina, where council's commercial credit accounts are not accepted. So branches from a job here are usually chipped on the block or carted to a larger council facility.

Does the national park west of town burn?

It does, both in planned burns and in wildfires. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service fire history maps a planned burn in Conondale National Park around the Summer Falls walkers camp, and an earlier wildfire in the same park that burnt about 347 hectares. On a rural block near the park, dead timber is cleared, low limbs come off and branches over sheds and the house are cut back before the fire season.
