Tree work in Kuluin

Three flying-fox roosts among the backyards

Council's flying-fox roost data lists three roost sites in Kuluin: Kuluin Neighbourhood Park, McArthur Park and Tallow Wood Environment Reserve. In a suburb this small, plenty of backyards sit near one of them, so a quote here starts by finding the nearest roost and planning the noisy part of the job, the cutting and chipping, around it.

The neighbourhood park roost is also a nursery. In December 2021 the council's flying-fox update named a maternity roost at Kuluin Neighbourhood Park, with young flying-foxes seen there. They are a protected species in Queensland, and a pup is not able to fly for its first weeks, so tree jobs near that park leave the colony undisturbed through spring and summer, when the young are born. Even the council generally keeps to low-impact work around its roosts in those months.

McArthur Park, home to another roost, is a neighbourhood park with multiple laneway access points, from Burwood Court, Elkhorn Street and Ibis Street among others. Those lanes are narrow, so gear for a backyard job beside the park comes in through the owner's own block, and trees standing in the park itself are left to the council.

Kuluin questions

Trimming, storm damage and moving the colony back

Has the council trimmed trees at the McArthur Park roost?

Yes. Its flying-fox log for McArthur Park shows selective trimming of encroaching trees in January 2020, done to prevent flying-foxes roosting over private land. For a private yard next door, pruning close to roosting bats stays within what is allowed.

Have storms damaged the roost trees?

One strong storm did. The same log records that it damaged a large portion of roost trees along the northern and western edges of the McArthur Park roost. After severe weather, leaning trees and hanging limbs on the blocks backing onto the park are worth inspecting, with any work timed around the bats.

Will the bats move back from the fences?

That is the council's aim. Its log for the Kuluin roost records bush regeneration in the low-conflict centre of the roost, about 15 visits a year from August 2022, to encourage the colony's footprint away from property boundaries. Trees on adjoining blocks may hold fewer bats over time, but pruning there still has to respect the protected roost and its buffer.
