Tree work in Montville

The town once called Razorback

Montville was first called Razorback, and council's history of the Blackall Range towns gives the reason: the steep ridge on which it stands. Houses line the top of that ridge and step down below it, so a job often starts with a steep driveway and very little room for a truck and chipper. Heavy limbs are lowered on ropes, so nothing runs downhill onto a roof or the road.

The memorial trees in the Village Green are tall spreading figs that overhang Memorial Close and much of the park. Children from Montville State School planted the six of them as an Arbour Day project in September 1923, and each tree carries a small brass plaque naming one of the dead from the First World War. Pruning them falls to council under the heritage rules, and work beside the Green avoids heavy cuts that would stress the old figs.

Montville questions

Kondalilla burns, the lookout park and the Green

How often is the Kondalilla bush burnt?

Nearly every year lately. The state parks service's fire history shows the same area of about 1.3 hectares in Kondalilla National Park burnt in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, though the first of those records is labelled a mechanical treatment. On blocks that back onto the park, dead wood is worth taking out and limbs lifting off the roof and gutters before the dry season.

Can the trees in the lookout park be thinned for a view?

No. The planning scheme maps Razorback Lookout Park as a Local Heritage Place held by council as trustee, with its heritage type recorded as park. Neighbours cannot prune its trees to open up a view, and work on an adjoining block leaves those trees and their roots intact.

What do the Village Green figs mean for the houses nearby?

Mostly crown work rather than removals. Three Ficus obliqua on the south-west side of the Green, with smaller trees and shrubs, join the memorial row to make an extensive green shady area. Shade trees on that scale drop leaf and fruit and run surface roots under lawns and paths, so nearby properties more often need crown lifting and pruning that spares the roots.
