Stump grinding on the Sunshine Coast
Ground out below the surface so the spot can be turfed or planted again, with the roots across the lawn taken out at the same time if you want them gone.
Stump grinding
What changes the price of a stump
Two stumps the same width can be very different jobs, and the difference is usually what is around them and under them.
Getting the grinder in
Grinders come in sizes, and the gap down the side of the house, any steps along it and how steep the yard is decide which one can reach the stump.
What is in the ground
Rock, old concrete, irrigation pipes and buried cables near a stump change how it is ground, so they are looked for on the visit rather than found halfway down.
Trees that shoot from the roots
Some trees send up new shoots from the roots once the trunk is gone, so ask how deep the grind goes and whether the surface roots come out too.
The grindings
A stump turns into a surprisingly big pile of wood chips and soil. It can be raked back into the hole, spread as mulch or taken away, and the quote says which.
How it works
What happens after you get in touch
The council question is answered before the price, and nothing is booked until you have the quote in writing and have said yes to it.
- 1
Tell us about the tree
The suburb, what the tree stands near and what you would like done with it.

- 2
Someone comes to look
A tree contractor who covers your area sees the tree, the access and whatever is underneath it.

- 3
The council position is checked
Lot size, how close the tree is to the house and the mapping on the block decide whether an application comes first.

- 4
Quoted in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date set out on one page. Nothing is booked until you accept it.

Stump questions
Depth, roots and the hole
How deep does the grind go?
Deep enough to lay turf or plant over the spot, which is what most people want. Going much deeper costs more and is rarely needed.
Can the roots across the lawn come out too?
Yes. They can be ground out along with the stump or left in the ground, and either way it is written into the quote so nobody is surprised on the day.
Will the hole sink later?
Grindings settle as they break down, so a hole filled with them alone tends to dip. A layer of soil on top before the turf goes down stops that.
Where do the offcuts go?
Grindings usually go back in the hole or onto the garden. Bigger offcuts go to a tip, and the council does not have free disposal of green waste, so cartage is part of the quote.
