Cotton trees and she-oaks at the river mouth
Cotton Tree Caravan Park, at the mouth of the Maroochy River, is on the Queensland Heritage Register. Its entry names a landmark near the park entrance, the Cotton Tree, a remnant of the earlier cotton trees on the reserve. Pruning or removing a tree inside a State heritage place can need heritage approval or an exemption before work starts.
The same entry lists palms along the river beach, young Norfolk Island pines toward the Maroochydore Beach end, cotton trees in the camping area and horsetail she-oaks shielding the park from the ocean beach. That is the beachfront mix around Cotton Tree, and one job here often takes in several of them, each handled a different way.
The entry also says the reserve's place on the river mouth has exposed it to king tides, cyclones and floods. Trees rooted in that sand can be undermined or loosened, and one that leans or lifts after a big tide or a storm needs checking before it fails.

Maroochydore questions
Sand loss and a flying-fox roost
Does erosion reach the beachfront trees?
It can, and storm erosion can leave their roots exposed. Council says Maroochydore Beach is prone to natural erosion events and that on average this beach loses more sand than it gains, so it pumps sand back from the Maroochy River about every two years. The dune plants holding that sand are part of council's foreshore protection, not something a neighbour can cut back.
Can trees beside the flying-fox roost be pruned at any time?
Only when the bats are away. Flying-foxes roost in Aragorn Street Bushland Reserve and at Stella Maris School, and council did its own work there after they had left. In 2017 it took woody weeds out of the understorey, extending the flying-fox exclusion buffer to 40m.
