Tree work in Noosa Heads
Noosa Hill, koalas and the headland pines
The Noosa Heads local plan code in Noosa Plan 2020 treats Noosa Hill as the skyline and vegetated backdrop of the town, and says the preservation of existing vegetation is critical. On the hillside blocks that makes selective pruning the usual path rather than removal, and the work is often on steep ground.
On the northern face of the hill, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service describes open forests of blue gums, ruby-sapped bloodwoods and Moreton Bay ash trees, where koalas are often seen. Those big eucalypts drop limbs and shed bark, so work on a block beside the hill starts with a koala check before anything is cut, and heavy limbs are lowered with care.
From the end of Park Road, the Palm Grove walk passes piccabeen palms, strangler figs and tuckeroos beneath towering hoop and kauri pines. Pines like those grow very tall on heavy, straight trunks, so taking one down near a house means climbing it and lowering it in sections, and piccabeen palms need their fronds and seed cleared regularly.

Noosa Heads questions
Covenants, heritage grounds and a roost
Can a protected tree be cut back for the view?
Not without checking first, because some land here carries vegetation covenants that the council enforces. In August 2022 the council reported dead trees suspected of being poisoned in a protected vegetation covenant on private land beside Noosa Inlet, among them Bribie Island pines, estimated to be 60 years old, and soil tests found herbicides. The covenant status of a lot is checked before any pruning or removal is quoted.
What about trees in heritage-listed grounds?
They need heritage approval or an exemption before any pruning or removal. Halse Lodge, on the Queensland Heritage Register, has grounds with mature trees, including a large eucalypt near the western driveway entrance and a mango tree.
Is there a flying-fox roost in Noosa Heads?
Yes. The council counts the flying-fox roost at Pinaroo Park among the shire's high conflict roosts and has a management plan for it. Trees on the surrounding blocks can be roost or buffer trees, so their pruning is limited to the state's low impact code of practice unless the state issues a roost management permit.
