Tree work in Mountain Creek

Wallum country and a tidal creek

Council's town history says Mountain Creek is named after the creek, which drains the southern slopes of Buderim and the wallum country nearby, and is tidal for a short distance before it reaches the Mooloolah River. That low ground takes the runoff, and trees on it often root shallowly and can lean or fall when the soil is saturated.

Along the creek, the Mountain Creek Riparian Reserve and Conservation Area protects wallum and creekside bushland, and council says 104 native species have been identified in it. A tree near the back fence on that edge may belong to the reserve, and work on a private tree beside it keeps debris, machinery and cuts out of the bushland.

Council's notes for the Mountain Creek Circuit trails mention blackbutt and bottlebrush. Blackbutt is a tall eucalypt with heavy, dense timber, so one standing near a house is usually taken down in sections on ropes rather than felled whole.

Mountain Creek questions

Fire maps, planned burns and a bat roost

Has fire been through the bushland here?

Yes. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service fire history maps a burnt area of about 129 hectares in Mountain Creek, burnt in 2021 and filed under Mooloolah River National Park. In April 2022 the conservation area was also earmarked in council's annual planned burn campaign, so branches over the roofs and gutters along its edge are worth cutting back before the bushfire season.

Can trees in the Kawana Roost be trimmed?

Only with the colony in mind. Council's flying-fox roost data lists one roost site in Mountain Creek, the Kawana Roost, and flying-foxes are protected in Queensland. Work in or beside it is planned around the bats, often by waiting until they have moved on, and a job on the next block may be timed the same way.
