Tree work in West Woombye

A tornado in March, a downpour in April

About midday on 28 March 2025 a tornado whipped through West Woombye, one of at least two landspout tornadoes on the Sunshine Coast that day. On one property its wind stripped an African tulip tree. Gusts like that can snap a tree in seconds on open rural land, so broken limbs and split trunks over the house, the sheds and the fences are the first things to make safe.

In April it was the rain. Overnight into 25 April 2025 the Bureau of Meteorology reported that 151mm was recorded at West Woombye in three hours, as thunderstorms with heavy rainfall hit south-east Queensland. Rain that heavy soaks the slopes within hours, and saturated ground lets big trees lean or topple in the next wind, so after a fall like that, trees near the house are worth checking for lifting roots and a fresh lean.

West Woombye questions

Triunia, Floydia and a burn on the list

Whose trees are along the reserve boundaries?

The council's, on its side of the fence. Bought with the council's environment levy, the Triunia Environment Reserve in West Woombye is three parcels, settled in 2004 and 2012 and managed by the council. Floydia Bushland Reserve is on its open space register as well, so beside either one, the first step is confirming which trees are on private land.

Is any burning planned in the Triunia reserve?

The council's proposed planned burn list for 2026 includes a 4.2 hectare planned burn there, marked pending. On blocks beside that bushland, the trees around a home are kept free of deadwood and low-hanging limbs, with no branches left reaching over the roof or into the gutters.
