Tree work in Tewantin

Poinciana Avenue and the Waratah Reserve roost

Heritage Noosa holds a postcard of poinciana trees in Gooloi Street, the old name of Poinciana Avenue. The card dates from the 1950s, so the big old poincianas there are long-standing character trees. Tewantin's local plan code expects development to retain the mature poinciana and fig trees along Poinciana Avenue, and asks for more poincianas in new street planting there. So where tree work beside the avenue is part of a development approval, it leans toward careful crown work and protecting roots rather than removal.

Noosa Council lists the flying-fox roost in Waratah Reserve among the shire's high conflict roosts, with a management plan of its own. On a block that backs onto the reserve, trimming or removing trees has to stay within the state's low impact code of practice, and anything that disturbs the roost vegetation needs a Queensland Government permit first.

The timing can be unusual too. After a large colony of little red flying-foxes had roosted there for about six months, the council's contractors carried out tree trimming in Waratah Reserve at night, on 20 and 21 March 2023, to open a buffer between the colony and the houses. Work on the blocks next door may have to fit the colony's timing as well, rather than a normal daytime schedule.

Tewantin questions

Falling limbs, stringybarks and storm surge

Do the big gums around Tewantin drop branches?

They do. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service warns bike riders in Tewantin National Park that blackbutt, flooded gums and other trees often drop small branches. On a block that holds the same eucalypts, the job is often deadwooding, clearing dropped branches from the roof and gutters, and checking each crown for weak limbs.

Could a stringybark in the yard be protected?

It could be. Tewantin National Park, which protects forest and heath remnants between Noosa and Cooroy, is home to the endangered swamp stringybark, a multi-trunked tree with grey, fibrous bark and creamy white flowers. A tree like that on a nearby block is identified before any cutting, because a threatened species can bring state protected plant rules into the job.

Which parts of town can storm surge reach?

During Tropical Cyclone Alfred, Noosa Council listed Hilton Terrace, Hilton Esplanade, Lewis Street and Mill Street among the low-lying areas storm surge could inundate, and said those areas often go under in lower-level river floods as well. Trees standing in ground that wet lean or fall more readily in the gales that follow, so storm work there starts with the root plate and any leaning trunk.
