Tree work in Cooroibah

Fire on the doorstep, reserves out the back

The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience records that in November 2019 a bushfire at Cooroibah near Noosa forced thousands of residents to evacuate, and that only one home was lost. On bush blocks with that history, thinning the trees that stand closest to the house is worth doing before each fire season.

Bushland reserves run through the district too. Noosa Council's open space data names the Cooroibah Environmental Reserve, which is also a nature refuge, Johns Landing Conservation Area, Edington Drive Environmental Reserve and Woodhaven Bushland Reserve. Many acreage blocks share a fence with one of them, and the reserve trees are the council's, so before any work near a back boundary the line is found, and every offcut stays on the private side.

Cooroibah questions

Great Sandy burns and exempt clearing

Why does the national park next door get burnt?

Planned burns keep its fuel down, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service fire history records one in Great Sandy National Park blocks off Lake Cooroibah Road. It was lit in August 2022 and covered about 52.9 hectares, after an earlier burn at Cooroibah South in July 2019. Blocks beside that bush are worth checking each year, with dead branches removed and the canopy kept off the roof.

When is clearing exempt in Noosa Shire?

Noosa Council says clearing may be exempt where it meets the Noosa Plan 2020 definition of exempt clearing, or where it is within an approved building envelope. Whether a Cooroibah lot has either is settled before a removal is quoted.
