Tree removal in Kings Beach

Tree removal, pruning and stump grinding in Kings Beach, for the houses and apartments between the Caloundra town centre and Caloundra Head.

Tree work in Kings Beach

South-east wind, apartment towers and filled ground

The beach here is protected by the head and faces south-east, straight into the prevailing wind and its salt spray. Trees in the yards and streets near the water are pruned to carry less of that wind, and salt-tolerant species are the ones that last.

Queensland Places notes that high-rise along the headland is the dominant architecture. A tree on the common property of a unit block needs the body corporate's approval before it is touched, and the gaps between towers are tight, so the timber may come out by elevated platform, by crane or carried by hand to the kerb.

As the beach grew popular, a creek at the beach was filled in for car parking. Ground near the foreshore can hide an old creek bed under fill, so a stump grinder may hit loose fill, buried rubble or wet ground, and a stump can sit in soil that is less stable than it looks.

Kings Beach questions

Cyclone seas, the headland reserve and a transplanted tree

How hard do cyclone seas hit the foreshore?

Hard. Rough seas from Cyclone Wendy in February 1972 exposed the erosion preventative rocks along Kings Beach, and another cyclone put some of the sand back a few days later. After seas like that, trees near the beach are checked for broken limbs and loosened root plates.

Can the coastal scrub on the headland be trimmed for a view?

No. The council's Caloundra Headland Foreshore Reserve is a mix of natural coastal vegetation and park open space, and neighbours cannot cut it back for views or access. Work on a private tree beside it keeps machinery, debris and root cutting out of the reserve.

Does the council keep its own trees on the foreshore?

Where it can. For the new surf life saving facility, the council listed a tree transplant among early works, moving a tree rather than felling it. A job on a block beside the foreshore park can expect the council to protect its trees and their roots.
