State forest burns beside the blocks

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service burns parts of the state forest here to bring its fuel load down. Its burn records list a planned burn in Ringtail State Forest, adjacent to Ringtail Creek Road. A much larger one was lit later in the Ringtail section, west of McKinnon Drive.

Burns like these lower the risk across the forest, but they stop at the boundary fence. On the blocks next door, regrowth and trees close to homes, sheds and driveways still need their own work: dead timber out, low branches lifted and nothing left touching a roof.

    The council position is checked

Lot size, how close the tree is to the house and the mapping on the block decide whether an application comes first.

Ringtail Creek questions

The Cooloothin Creek reserve and the council's own burns

Who looks after the Cooloothin Creek reserve?

The council does. On its open space list, the Cooloothin Creek Bushland Reserve on McKinnon Drive is an environmental reserve held in council trust. On a block beside it, the boundary is settled before any cutting, and branches and machinery are kept off the creek-side bush.

Are the burns all lit at one time of year?

No. The two state forest burns were lit in August 2024 and January 2025, and the four burns Noosa Council carried out on its own bushland reserves in 2023 included a burn in Ringtail Creek. With fuel being reduced in more than one season, trimming around a house is worth keeping up through the year rather than leaving it until the summer.
