Tree work in Mapleton
Volcanic rock and two kinds of forest
Queensland Parks draws attention to the rocks around the pool at Mapleton Falls, whose hexagonal shapes were formed by volcanic activity 25 million years ago. Rock of that kind can sit just under the soil on the range, so a stump grinder may strike stone and roots may be wrapped around buried rock. The grinding depth is settled once the stump is exposed, not promised beforehand.
The national park at the falls protects riparian rainforest and open eucalypt forest, and blocks near it can hold both. One job may combine softer rainforest timber with heavy eucalypt hardwood, which changes the rigging, the chipper needed and how the wood is taken away.
There is a heritage tree at the falls as well. The planning scheme maps Mapleton Falls National Park and Ex-flying Fox Giant Box Tree as a Local Heritage Place, so that giant box is protected under council's heritage provisions, and work on land nearby keeps machinery, cuts and stump grinding clear of its roots and canopy.

How it works
What happens after you get in touch
The council question is answered before the price, and nothing is booked until you have the quote in writing and have said yes to it.
- 1
Tell us about the tree
The suburb, what the tree stands near and what you would like done with it.

- 2
Someone comes to look
A tree contractor who covers your area sees the tree, the access and whatever is underneath it.

- 3
The council position is checked
Lot size, how close the tree is to the house and the mapping on the block decide whether an application comes first.

- 4
Quoted in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date set out on one page. Nothing is booked until you accept it.

Mapleton questions
Memorial trees, tip mornings and Baxter Bluff
Who decides what happens to the memorial trees?
Council, under its heritage rules. The heritage overlay in the planning scheme covers Mapleton Hall, Sportsground and Memorial Trees, which puts pruning or removing those trees in council's hands. If a limb from one of them hangs over a neighbouring yard, council is asked first.
When is the Mapleton transfer station open?
Three mornings a week. Council lists its hours as 8.00am to 1.00pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so branches and logs from a job on another day are either chipped where they fall or trucked down the range to a bigger council site. Green waste is charged for at council tips, and mixed loads cost more, so it is kept separate.
Who looks after the bush at Baxter Bluff?
Council. Its environment levy land register lists Baxter Bluff Conservation Area as about 3.99 hectares, settled in December 2005 and now under council management. Its trees are council's responsibility, and work on an adjoining block keeps felled limbs and debris out of the reserve.
