Tree work in Maroochy River
A heritage rock above the floodplain
Dunethin Rock was entered on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2009. Its listing describes a rough path up to the summit plateau, shaded by a range of mature trees. Those trees stand inside a state heritage place, so pruning or removing them is a matter for the council and the heritage approvals, and work on neighbouring blocks keeps clear of the listed boundary.
South of the rock, the council's bushland reserve network covers more than 37 hectares of volcanic and metamorphic rocks, where 265 native plant species have been recorded. Stumps on blocks near the rock can sit on or among that stone, which limits how deep a grinder can go, so the ground is worth checking before a stump is quoted.
In 1901 residents petitioned for the land around the rock to become a public reserve, arguing it was the only unselected parcel on the Maroochy River above flood level. The flats around it still go under: the Bureau of Meteorology recorded a flood peak of 3.46 metres at Dunethin Rock on 26 February 2022, classed as minor flooding. Water like that can undermine trees on the flats or leave them leaning, and a truck, chipper or stump grinder waits until the soaked ground has dried.

Maroochy River questions
The Blue Heart reserve and the mangroves
Is the bush on the river flats council land?
Much of it now is. In May 2021 Sunshine Coast Council secured more than 38 hectares in the Blue Heart and added it to its Coolum Creek Environment Reserve. The purchase was three land parcels on River Road. Their trees are left to the council, and a job beside the reserve begins by pinning down the boundary.
Can mangroves be trimmed to open up a river view?
Not as part of a tree job. From the top of Dunethin Rock the view takes in the Maroochy River, its mangroved banks and the cane fields around them, and those mangroves are protected marine plants in Queensland. Riverfront work sticks to trees on dry land and leaves the mangroves as they are.
