Tree work in Golden Beach

Old figs, small lots and a battered seawall

Explorer William Landsborough's wife Maria planted two Moreton Bay fig trees near their home in about 1884. The site is now known as Landsborough Parade. A fig grows into a very large tree with wide surface roots and long, heavy limbs, and a big one near the Parade is worth checking for heritage protection before any work is booked.

Council's local history says Golden Beach was first subdivided in 1928, and most allotments were 24 perches. On a lot that size a mature tree usually stands near the house, the fences and the neighbours, so it comes down in sections on ropes rather than being felled whole.

The Queensland Reconstruction Authority says severe weather in 2021 and 2022 badly damaged the old seawall, and that erosion then saw conditions quickly deteriorate. Council's plans for the Diamond Head foreshore at Keith Hill Park include new tree planting to restore shade lost in recent shoreline erosion. Trees on the waterfront and on blocks near it can lose soil from around their roots in a storm tide.

    The council position is checked

Lot size, how close the tree is to the house and the mapping on the block decide whether an application comes first.

Golden Beach questions

A heritage tree, a roost and the butterfly park

Is there a heritage-listed tree in Golden Beach?

Yes. The Landsborough Tree is mapped in the planning scheme's overlay data as a Local Heritage Place whose heritage type is a tree, so pruning it or working under its canopy is a council heritage matter rather than an ordinary job. Work on a block beside it keeps its roots and limbs protected.

Can trees next to the Porter Park roost be pruned?

Usually only around the colony. Council installed a sprinkler system in the treetops at Porter Park, along its northern and western edge, to nudge the flying fox roost further into the park and away from the houses. Pruning a boundary tree on a neighbouring block may have to wait until the bats are away.

Can the butterfly park's trees be cut back from next door?

Not by a neighbour. Diamond Head Park is known as the butterfly park for the butterfly-attracting trees, shrubs and grasses in the open forest and mangrove ecosystems of the park, and mangroves are protected marine plants under Queensland fisheries law. Trimming toward the water from a private block starts with knowing exactly what is being cut.
